Where To Buy A Tesla Electric Car

The tax credits for purchasing electric vehicles (EVs) got a major overhaul on Jan. 1. EV tax credits have been around for years, but they were redesigned as part of President Biden's massive climate bill signed into law last year. And in the process, they got complicated. Really complicated.

That may sound generous, but electric vehicles are pricey. Jessica Caldwell, the executive director of insights at Edmunds, points out that most EVs sold today cost over 60 grand. "It's going to be hard to get a vehicle at these prices," she says.

The new climate law also added income limits for the tax credit: a maximum of $300,000 for a household, $150,000 for an individual or $225,000 for a head of household. That's a big chunk of change, but because electric vehicles are so expensive, it will disqualify a fair number of buyers.

If your company could use a sedan, you may be in luck. But larger vehicles can be tough to find right now, says Hari Nayar, the VP of Fleet Electrification & Sustainability at Merchants Fleet. You want an electric pickup? Get in line.

On Monday, Ford announced it was cutting prices on the Mustang Mach-E, an electric SUV that competes against Tesla's Model Y. Prices dropped by between $900 and $5,900, depending on the vehicle's options.

It was clearly a response to Tesla, and Marin Gjaja, the chief customer officer of Ford's electric vehicle business, confirmed to reporters that the company was "responding to changes in the marketplace."

At the Washington, D.C., Auto Show last month, attendees Xavion Butler and Frank Smart recently agreed that electric vehicles are the future. "Get on board or get left behind," Butler said cheerfully.

Making the best-selling electric vehicle in the U.S. significantly cheaper, while also boosting production, would logically provide a direct boost to electric vehicle sales. Globally, Tesla delivered 1.3 million vehicles last year, and it plans to sell 1.8 million this year.

Depending on where you live, there are two options for buying a Tesla. First, showrooms located in New Hampshire, California, Virginia and Colorado can sell you a Tesla directly. Showrooms tend to keep a limited supply of cars on hand, however, so they may not have exactly what you want. But if they have the stock, you can buy and drive like you would at a normal dealership. In all other states, the law either forbids this or is unclear.

If you buy and take delivery of a qualified electric vehicle between August 17, 2022 and December 31, 2022, the same rules apply, plus the vehicle must also undergo final assembly in North America.

The credit for qualified 2-wheeled plug-in electric vehicles expired in 2022. If you bought a 2-wheeled vehicle in 2021, but placed it in service during 2022, you may still be able to claim the credit for 2022. If you bought it after 2021, you can't claim the credit.

The Washington, D.C.-based consumer advocacy group's Electric Vehicle Accessibility Index ranked states by whether you can directly purchase an electric vehicle from a dealership in the state, and whether there are specific licensing fees on the vehicles.

In Iowa, direct sale of electric motor vehicles by manufacturers is prohibited by state law: a roadblock for electric car dealers like Tesla, which sell directly to consumers instead of working through a third-party car dealership.

Advocates at the CCC, an independent nonprofit that aims to promote more choice and freedom for consumers, argue that the laws passed by Iowa's government make buying an electric vehicle cost-prohibitive for Iowans.

Iowa has had conflicts with electric vehicle companies like Tesla in the past. In 2014, the Iowa Department of Transportation stopped Tesla from offering test drives in West Des Moines, saying the company was not allowed to hold the event as it was not a licensed auto dealer in the state, and because car manufacturers cannot sell directly to the public.

Iowa was given the lowest rating for electric vehicle access alongside Alabama, Arkansas, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Carolina, West Virginia, and Wisconsin in the CCC index. State officials should remove additional fees and selling restrictions, said Elizabeth Hicks, US Affairs Analyst and index co-author, so that Iowa can keep up with other states in increasing electric vehicle usage.

Tesla, Inc. (/ˈtɛslə/ TESS-lə or /ˈtɛzlə/ TEZ-lə[a]) is an American multinational automotive and clean energy company headquartered in Austin, Texas. Tesla designs and manufactures electric vehicles (electric cars and trucks), battery energy storage from home to grid-scale, solar panels and solar roof tiles, and related products and services. Tesla is one of the world's most valuable companies and is, as of 2023[update], the world's most valuable automaker. In 2021, the company had the most worldwide sales of battery electric vehicles and plug-in electric vehicles, capturing 21% of the battery-electric (purely electric) market and 14% of the plug-in market (which includes plug-in hybrids). Through its subsidiary Tesla Energy, the company develops and is a major installer of photovoltaic systems in the United States. Tesla Energy is also one of the largest global suppliers of battery energy storage systems, with 3.99 gigawatt-hours (GWh) installed in 2021.

Tesla was incorporated in July 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning as Tesla Motors. The company's name is a tribute to inventor and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla. In February 2004, via a $6.5 million investment, Elon Musk became the largest shareholder of the company. He has served as CEO since 2008. According to Musk, the purpose of Tesla is to help expedite the move to sustainable transport and energy, obtained through electric vehicles and solar power. Tesla began production of its first car model, the Roadster sports car, in 2008. This was followed by the Model S sedan in 2012, the Model X SUV in 2015, the Model 3 sedan in 2017, the Model Y crossover in 2020, and the Tesla Semi truck in 2022. The company plans to start production of the Cybertruck light-duty pickup truck in 2023.[8] The Model 3 is the all-time bestselling plug-in electric car worldwide, and, in June 2021, became the first electric car to sell 1 million units globally.[9] Tesla's 2022 full year deliveries were around 1.31 million vehicles, a 40% increase over the previous year,[10][11] and cumulative sales totaled 3 million cars as of August 2022.[12] In October 2021, Tesla's market capitalization reached $1 trillion, the sixth company to do so in U.S. history.

In January 2012, Tesla ceased production of the Roadster, and in June the company launched its second car, the Model S luxury sedan.[38] The Model S won several automotive awards during 2012 and 2013, including the 2013 Motor Trend Car of the Year,[39] and became the first electric car to top the monthly sales ranking of a country, when it achieved first place in the Norwegian new car sales list in September 2013.[40] The Model S was also the bestselling plug-in electric car worldwide for the years 2015 and 2016.[41]

In February 2017, Tesla Motors changed its name to Tesla, Inc., to better reflect the scope of its expanded business, which now included electric vehicles, battery energy storage systems, and solar power generation.[50][51][52]

That year Tesla also started its philanthropic effort. Tesla made multiple contributions of solar power to areas recovering from disasters in 2017, in particular installing a solar plus storage system to restore electricity at a hospital in Puerto Rico, following the destruction from Hurricane Maria.[53][54] In July 2018, the company donated $37.5 million to kindergarten to 12th grade science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education in Nevada.[55]

In August 2018, CEO Elon Musk briefly considered taking Tesla private.[60][61] The plan did not materialize, and gave rise to much controversy and many lawsuits including a securities fraud charge from the SEC. By the end of 2018, the production problems had been overcome, and the Model 3 was the world's bestselling plug-in electric car for the year.[62]

On March 22, 2022, Tesla launched its new car factory outside Berlin, with Chief Executive Elon Musk handing over the first deliveries to customers. The US carmaker's Giga Berlin plant is the largest for electric vehicles in Europe.[100] On April 7, 2022, Tesla celebrated the public opening of the Giga Texas facility with its Cyber Rodeo event attended by an estimated 15,000 invitees.[101]

The Model S is a five-door liftback sedan. Deliveries began on June 22, 2012.[106] The car became the first electric vehicle to top the monthly sales ranking in any country, when it achieved first place in the Norwegian new car sales list in September 2013.[107][40] The Model S won the 2013 Motor Trend Car of the Year,[39] the 2013 "World Green Car",[108] Automobile magazine's 2013 "Car of the Year",[109] Time magazine's Best 25 Inventions of the Year 2012 award,[110] as well as the 2019 Motor Trend "Ultimate Car of the Year".[111] 041b061a72
